Analyses of Bisphenol A and Melamin
PHYTOCONTROL is pleased to announce that in addition to your regular analyses in the laboratory, the R & D department has recently developed two new methods of analysis:
- Determination of the content of bisphenol A in foodstuffs by LC-MS-MS with LOQ of 0.005 mg / kg.
- Determination of Melamine in food for humans including baby food and animal feed with a limit of quantification of 0.1 mg / kg.
Bisphenol A (BPA) or 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane is a chemical substance used mainly in combination with other chemicals substances for the manufacture of plastics and resins.
BPA can migrate in small amounts in food and beverages stored in materials containing this substance.
According to the EU Regulation No. 10/2011, a specific migration limit noted LMS is set to 0.6 mg / kg of food for Bisphénol. The specific limit of migration is the maximum quantity of a authorized given substance released from a quantity material or article into food or food simulants.
On the other hand, it is important to note that according to the EU Regulation N ° 321/2011 amending EU Regulation No. 10/2011, the BPA is banned in baby bottles. In France, Law No. 2012-1442 of 24 December 2012 aims to suspend the manufacture, import, export and the market of any food packaging containing bisphenol. The effective date of this act is scheduled for January 2015.
Melamin (2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine, CAS No. 108-78-1) is a chemical compound widely used in the manufacture of plastic materials, coating of cans, paper and carton. But also in the manufacture of tableware and kitchenware
In the 1990s, despite being prohibited as a food additive, melamin was commonly used in many countries (including China) to increase the apparent protein content in babyfood and pet food. Melamin contains high levels of nitrogen and its illegally addition in foods simulates a high protein content.
According to the EU Regulation N ° 594/2012 amending EU Regulation No. 1881/2006, the maximum level of melamin is 1 mg / kg for preparations of milk powder for babies and 2.5 mg / kg for other food.
